Scroll Co-Founder’s X Account Hijacked in Sophisticated Crypto Phishing Scheme
Ye Chen, co-founder of blockchain project Scroll, fell victim to a meticulously orchestrated account takeover on X (formerly Twitter). Attackers transformed his verified profile into a replica of X's official support channel, complete with platform branding and fabricated copyright violation warnings.
The compromised account targeted high-profile cryptocurrency figures with direct messages posing as X's rights management team. Messages contained urgent 48-hour compliance notices and malicious links—a hallmark of phishing campaigns designed to exploit crisis mentality. Blockchain researcher Wu Blockchain confirmed the breach, urging Chen's 47,000 followers to disregard all communications from the account.
This incident mirrors a growing trend of attackers weaponizing trusted industry accounts. The hackers amplified credibility by flooding Chen's timeline with reposts from verified X accounts before launching the DM campaign—a tactic previously seen in attacks against crypto executives and journalists.
